On April 22, 2012 the designer Kim Lieu presented a fashion show at the Ernst Cultural Center in Annandale, Virginia, to a local audience in a full capacity theater in spite of the unseasonal April storm, rain and cold.
The program consisted of five parts:
- Part I covered traditional Vietnamese women’s dresses from antiquity to the 1970s. In addition to the “Giao Lanh,” the “five-paneled,” and “four-paneled” dresses, etc., the Indochinese “ao dai” was featured, the outfit worn mostly by southern Vietnamese women in the 1940s. The dress was loose, knee high, worn with white pants and wooden sandals;
- Part II covered a series of hand-painted evening gowns;
- Part III featured a collection of wedding gowns, added by (a) white “ao dai” with a phoenix-dragon cape and bi-colored turban. The escort/groom, wore a specially designed white outfit; (b) white brocade cape worn outside a red dress, topped with a long white tulle head piece. The escort/groom, wore a Vietnamese traditional black ao dai, and (c) the bride in a four-in-one gown was escorted by two little bride maids, each worn an “ao dai” painted with cherries or tulips;
- Part IV was a new collection for summer 2012. It included several Vietnamese “yem,” worn with Hawaiian motif pants and/or mini skirt, with conic hats designed and hand painted with patterns matching those of the bottom piece; a sun dress, as well as bouffant pants, and
- Part V, a special collection of evening dresses for the 70 something, 80 something, and 90 something. The collection featured (a) a hand painted light pink dress with gray hydrangea with a hand painted pink hydrangea on a gray long scarf for women in their 70s; (b) a black dress with hand painted hot pink mums and matching hand embroidered black mums on a hot pink long scarf for women in their 80s, and (c) a dark brown dress with hand painted white night bloomer and long light green scarf with hand embroidered white mums for women in their 90s.
These amateur models, including the little bride maids and the seniors in Part V, showed their utmost enthusiasm and had dedicated long days and hours to practice and rehearse the show.
